Health Guides & Medicine Advice
Practical tips, correct usage, side-effects and safety precautions — written by pharmacists.
Safe Use of Antibiotics
Antibiotics treat bacterial infections — not viral illnesses like the common cold. Always:
- Complete the full prescribed course — stopping early can cause resistance.
- Never self-prescribe; get a doctor’s diagnosis and recommended drug/dose.
- Report allergic reactions (rash, itching, breathing difficulty) immediately.
- Common interactions: some antibiotics reduce effectiveness of contraceptives; inform your doctor about other medicines you take.
If you experience severe side-effects (high fever, severe diarrhea, jaundice) stop medication and contact your physician.
Managing Fever & Pain at Home
For mild fever and body pain:
- Use paracetamol as per label/dose for adults and children (weight-based dosing for kids).
- Ensure hydration, rest and monitor temperature.
- Seek immediate care for fever > 40°C, persistent vomiting, confusion, or decreased urine output.
Avoid giving aspirin to children with viral symptoms due to Reye's syndrome risk.
Vitamins & Supplements — What to Know
Vitamins can help when deficiency exists. BUT:
- Get blood tests if you suspect deficiency (e.g., Vitamin D, B12).
- High doses may be harmful — follow doctor guidance.
- Supplements aren't a substitute for a balanced diet.
Pharmacist Tip
Keep medicines in original packaging, away from children and direct sunlight. Check expiry before use.
When to see a doctor
- Persistent fever > 48 hours
- Breathing difficulty
- Severe, uncontrolled pain
- Signs of allergic reaction
